Chem-Trend, a global leader in the development and production of high-performance release agents, purging compounds and other ancillary molding products, today announced the addition of its new water-based primer product series. The new series of primers for the Chemlease® and Zyvax® brands creates a full water-based release system for composites manufacturers – an industry first. Specially formulated to overcome challenges in wind, aerospace and fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) markets, the primer series is currently available in most countries and expected for worldwide distribution in the coming months.

The new series joins Chem-Trend’s existing water-based product portfolio, including Chemlease® and Zyvax® release agents, cleaners, sealers, topcoats and now primers. Available as a complete system for the composites industry, the water-based products optimize new and used tool surfaces to enhance performance through increased release ease, extended tool life and reduced HSE (health, safety and environment) impact. Additional benefits include:

•Imparting a high gloss on the tool surface for high-quality finished parts
•Lower VOCs for environmentally conscious operations
•Longer periods between top-coat touch ups
•Lower odors for an improved working environment
•Advanced tool-surface conditioning to help eliminate defects
“Our dedicated teams are always working to improve sustainability by developing products that overcome manufacturing process challenges in ways that reduce environmental impact and provide better working conditions,” said Amanda Pugh, business development director, Rubber and Composites, Chem-Trend. “The water-based primer series provides a ‘greener’ option for environmentally conscious operations, reduces odor levels for more pleasant work spaces, and works just as well if not better than a number of leading solvent-based products on the market.”

Formulated to effectively fill in porosity and close surfaces on new molds and repaired areas – the new series can also be used to resurface worn tooling for extended equipment life and improved part quality. The water-based primer matches the same performance standard as Chem-Trend’s proven solvent-based primer series of products, while providing a longer working application window.
