AGY recently proclaim that it signed a long term agreement with Taishan Fiberglass Inc to allow Taishan Fiberglass produce its S-1 HMTM high performance glass roving for wind blade. Manufactured under license from AGY, the roving will be sold globally by both companies. AGY will focus on the wind energy markets in the US and Europe, and CTG/Taishan Fiberglass will sell to the wind energy markets in the Asia Pacific and Africa region.

AGY chose to partner with CTG/Taishan Fiberglass after a review of several potential suppliers. According to AGY President, Drew Walker, “We selected CTG/Taishan Fiberglass because of their experience in the wind energy market as well as their technical skills to produce an S-Series® glass fiber in the volumes and formats required by the high tech wind energy market.”

CTG/ Taishan Fiberglass is one of the world’s largest fiber glass manufacturers whose main focus is supplying the highest quality fiber glass to its customers at the best price and with the best service. “We are very pleased to partner with AGY,” said Mr. Zhiyao Tang, Chairman and President of CTG/Taishan Fiberglass. “We currently supply roving and fabrics the large blades used in wind generation. We will combine the new S-1 HM materials with our existing products in our sales and marketing efforts to the growing wind energy market.”

Utilizing a proprietary glass formulation designed to maximize performance properties while allowing for high volume and economical manufacture, the S-1 HM roving provide significantly higher modulus and enhanced fatigue performance versus traditional E-Glass for wind turbine blades. “The S-1 HM roving are the highest tensile modulus glass fiber available - 90 GPa (13,053ksi),” explained Walker. “These property improvements versus typical E-Glass will enable manufacturers to make larger blades, which produce more energy. Our roving are specifically aimed at areas of the blade where high-performance glass will allow weight to be saved and where the extra performance of S-1 HM versus a traditional E-Glass will be evident.  For example, in the spar and spar caps, leading and trailing edge and blade root.”
